Our Podcast about concept albums tackled Freak Out!
In our Podcast “Sonic Ventures”, featuring a series of discussions about concept albums, we dedicated an episode to Freak Out! If you get a chance to listen please feel free to share your thoughts. We give a shout out to Dweezil too! Here a link to Apple podcasts, but it is available on all the streaming platforms. We barely scratched the surface of all the things you could talk about.

Robert, I agree with the notion, that Freak Out is an album experience. I always listen to it as a whole. Same with the other MOI albums.
I either didn’t know or forgot, that monster magnet was a product. It’s been something like 30 years since I read the Real FZ Book.
Here started the conceptual continuity!

We take for granted that there’s an obvious different experience when you listen to an album all the way through - but there are lots of people alive today that never had the physical media in their hands and are not used to playing whole albums or even thinking in terms of albums - that it’s a “thing” is an abstraction. That’s one of the things we hope to encourage - exploring the music as part of a whole - as an album.
I too was tickled when Joël went into the history of Monster Magnet… I wanted to google it right away. I think we opened a few doors in that discussion that would have allowed us to have several episodes devoted to Freak Out! - which I hope makes people want to listen to the music again and have their own discussions about it.
Our next episode is being recorded Friday - we’re doing John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme. We’ve both been living with the album in heavy rotation for about 7 weeks. The hardest part is NOT talking about the albums before we meet because the whole point is to capture that initial discussion. It’s hard because of course as I think of something and I want to reach out to Joël right away… lol.
Thanks for taking the time to listen. We’ve got broader plans for season two - this first season is only going to be an 8 episode run. We’re looking at various platforms for enhanced content and engagement with our audience - including reward music - we’ll be exploring that over the next 6 months or so. As two music guys were just happy doing this right now because it gives us an excuse to deep dive into all this amazing stuff - music really is life. Thanks again for your feedback and taking the time to listen.
